City of Albuquerque, Bernalillo County to Honor Johnny Tapia on September 23

Wells Park Community Center to be renamed “Johnny Tapia Community Center as Wells Park” on September 23

The City of Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, and Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department will host a celebration at the Wells Park Community Center on September 23 to commemorate the renaming of the center to “Johnny Tapia Community Center at Wells Park” in honor of the late 5-time boxing world champion Johnny Tapia.

The day’s events will begin at 10:00am with a ceremony renaming of the community center. A statue of Johnny Tapia, entitled “Boxing Victory 21 Celebration,” created by artist Steve Weems will also be unveiled.

From 1:00-5:00 pm, an amateur card South Valley Boxing Club and Chavez Promotions will host a WBC and USA Boxing Tournament at Civic Plaza amateur boxing card featuring fighters from across the Southwest. Tapia’s sons, Johnny “Niccolai”, and Johnny “Lorenzo” Tapia, will be making their amateur debuts on the card.

A concert is set the follow the bouts at 5:00 pm with New Mexico Musicians: Al Muniz with special guest Timo Martinez, Lori Ortega, Red Wine and Legacy of Santa Fe.

Both the boxing event and the concert are free.
