Angelo Leo Wins SWFight.com’s Boxing Knockout of the Year
Up until his fourth professional fight Angelo Leo (5-0, 2KOs) had not shown a lot knockout power. The bantamweight narrowly squeezed out two of his first three victories via majority decision.
He must have learned to not let the his fights go to the judges as on January 25th’s “Return Of The Warrior” card at Buffalo Thunder he earned his first victory via stoppage when he blasted Michael Herrera with a crushing left uppercut earning Leo the 2014 Southwest Fight News Boxing Knockout of the Year award.
The set up and blow that ensued was Juan Manuel Marquez-esque. Here’s our recap from the day after the bout:
The way Angelo Leo (4-0, 1KO) easily put away Michael Herrera in their bantamweight would make you think he is a true power puncher.
Leo would feint a right hand to the body that Herrera would bite on. The deceiving move would leave a big opening that Leo would capitalize on with a crushing left uppercut.
The blow sent Herrera falling backwards to the canvass. His head would rest on the bottom rope, his body would grasp for air as the referee presented a pointless 10-count. Even more surprising was that Herrera’s corner did not immediately jump into the ring to come to the aid of their fighter.
Do not forget that Leo is only 19-years-old, he posses very good technical skill and if power becomes part of his repertoire he is going to be scary for years to come.
In May, Leo would go on and defeat James Piar via technical knockout but despite starting off the year red hot we would not see Leo in another match for the rest of the year.
Here’s to hoping that the most exciting fighter of 2014 in the New Mexico-El Paso area has many more bouts in 2015.
Stay tuned for more Boxing and MMA awards this week.
