The King of the Cage promotion is as storied as a MMA entity can be; the promotion has been a mainstay for producing New Mexico MMA. The longest running show still active in the state, King of the Cage is also very prominent in regions all over the country. King of the Cage has been on a tear in the Albuquerque area showcasing several exciting shows in the past couple of years and will now look to take over the regional market down south. On April 19th, King of the Cage “Throwdown” will invade the Las Cruces Convention Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico for a fight card stacked with amateur talent and headlined by a professional featured bout.
The show represents the second of six King of the Cage events scheduled in New Mexico for 2014 and first of three to be held in Las Cruces. King of the Cage and MavTV have not been to Southern New Mexico for some time and the return will be welcomed by a fight community who has not had very many premier martial arts events in their area. The fight card will feature 16 martial arts gyms from several states in the region most notably the Las Cruces and El Paso area.
Atop the fight card, Judgement MMA’s John Rozema will take his talents from Rio Rancho to Las Cruces to headline the event and for fight fans, we know that when “Rock’em Sock’em” John Rozema is fighting, we are in for a treat! Rozema is scheduled to take on Derek Cranford of El Paso’s Get Fit Fight Gym. For the evening’s co-headlining bout, Kevin Wirth of Durango, Colorado will take on Cristobal Chavez of El Paso, Texas in a title elimination bout to decide who would fight King of the Cage 135-pound Amateur Champion Robert Herrera. Both fighters have already fought the rising star Herrera, Wirth lost a classic to the Champion in December and Chavez actually owns a victory over Herrera from before he became the promotion’s Champion.
Farmington’s Robert Herrera was supposed to have an opportunity to avenge the loss to Chavez on this fight card but unfortunately, Herrera suffered am injury that prevented his participation on the “Throwdown” fight card. SWFight would like to join KOTC in wishing Herrera a speedy recovery.
From a Flyweight bout to a Super-Heavyweight bout, the “Throwdown” event is full of MMA action. Featured on the fight card is a WMMA bout between Diana Rodriguez and Amanda Estrella, a solid match-up between Judgement MMA’s Jesse Sandoval and Dona Ana Boxing Club fighter Victor Orquiz, and several fighters representing the Las Cruces Bonecrusher gym and El Paso’s Get Fit Fight gym.
King of the Cage would like to recognize Get Fit Fight Gym fighter Anthony “Tony” Bowler and extend their deepest sympathy to Tony’s friends and family. A former Army Sergeant and mixed martial artist, Tony was murdered on March 24, 2014 in El Paso, TX. He was scheduled to fight on the event and had previously competed for King of the Cage in 2013. KOTC match-maker Jon Judy was fortunate enough to meet Mr. Bowler and relayed his condolences and stating, ” He could truly say he was a very pleasant and easy-going guy and he most certainly will be missed by all those who knew him. Again, our deepest sympathy to the Bowler family.” We would like to join in on those sentiments and speaking for the staff here at SWFight, we offer our deepest condolences to the Bowler family as well.
