Borg faces Saudino for Sugar Creek Showdown Flyweight Title

One of the very best talents residing in New Mexico is on a journey to continue his path of perfection. A career that started two years ago in September of 2011, an Albuquerque trained fighter will look to keep his record unblemished as he travels to Hinton, Oklahoma to fight for a promotional title. While the title may be relevant to the regional circuit in Oklahoma, the bout means much more to our local athlete here in this region as a win here solidifies one of the best years for any single New Mexico fighter.

Ray Borg (4-0 Professional, 4-0 Amateur) is arguably one of the premier prospects in the State of New Mexico and his bout with Kansas native Jeimeson Saudino (7-1) should come with heavy anticipation from our local fight fans. A win only solidifies Borg’s placement as a top-tier prospect. Borg will be fighting for the Sugar Creek Showdown promotion on November 23rd.

The bout could be a challenging one for Borg as Saudino is a Bellator MMA and Titan FC veteran who has a lone loss dating way back to 2011. Since that loss, Saudino is 6-0 with two submission wins and two knockouts. If anything can be read into Saudino’s lone loss is that it came by submission and Borg is a submission specialist. Six of the eight professional and amateur bouts Borg has competed in have ended via submission and in his most recent outing his exceptional outing was on full display.

One of the state’s very best fighters will be in action this weekend. Ray Borg travels to Oklahoma to fight for a promotional title.

Expected to make his Bellator MMA debut back in October at the Bellator 105 show in Rio Rancho, Borg is returning to action for the first time since his marquee win this past August over New Mexico fan favorite Angelo Sanchez. When Borg wasn’t announced as part of the Bellator event, many fans wondered why the “Win To Get In” winner did not get his reward for winning the Orthrus Promotion event. One of the reasons why we didn’t get to see Borg on Spike TV’s broadcast was due to his desire to stay at 125-pounds.

The bout with Sanchez was held at the Bantamweight weight limit of 135-pounds that required Borg to compete ten-pounds heavier than normal and Sanchez to cut an extra ten-pounds. When talking about the reason for taking the Sanchez fight above his natural weight class Borg told SWFight, “I knew fighting Angelo would get me some recognition but more than anything i wanted to show that I can compete with higher level fighters.”

The win did in fact open some eyes to the true talent that Borg possessed and the win came against one of New Mexico’s most recognizable fighters. Borg’s wrestling chops shined in the bout; a fight that saw Borg get takedown after takedown, slam Sanchez and work a relentless pace from top position. While Borg was already on the radar for being part of the new wave of MMA’s hybrid styled fighters that excel in all different aspects of combat sports, the win truly solidified Borg as one of New Mexico’s very best.

Along with a perfect 2013 that has seen Borg win all three professional bouts, he was also awarded the opportunity to take over the FIT KIDZ program which is the youth program over at his gym, FIT NHB. The opportunity was one of high-regard to Borg who was very excited to take over the task of being the role-model to the youth at the gym.

“I don’t party, drink or smoke so it’s not like I have to change my life style but it actually helps me,” Borg said discussing his status as the coach of the FIT KIDZ program, “Whenever I need a little extra push or drive to keep going, I remember that I have my kids looking up to me.”

A win over Saudino on Saturday night will cap of an excellent year for Borg and fight fans should fully expect even bigger things out of the 20-year old athlete. We encourage fight fans to join us in sending our support to Ray and his team in their travels and fight endeavors happening this weekend. Make sure to send over all of your positive thoughts his way and look forward to welcoming him back to New Mexico after his title bout over in Oklahoma.
