Earlier today Fidel Maldonado Jr.’s father Fidel Sr. confirmed that his son has signed a contract to fight Luis Ramos Jr. in a light-welterweight contest, Monday November 11th in San Antonio, Texas. The bout according to Maldonado is scheduled as the main event for Fox Sports 1’s weekly installment of Golden Boy Live.
“I think Fidel is gonna walk him down,” says Maldonado Sr. of the match up with Ramos (23-1, 10KOs). “As for what might be next on the agenda for the winner? I think they’re looking to match us up with (Omar) Figueroa.” The undefeated Figueroa is currently one of the hottest names in boxing and in July claimed the interim WBC lightweight championship of the world.
Maldonado Jr. (16-2, 13KOs) is 3-0 with two sensational knockouts since his controversial split decision loss to Michael Perez. Ramos Jr. is coming off of a tough loss to 2000 Olympic Silver Medalist Ricardo Williams, in a fight stopped in the fifth round due to cuts over each of Ramos’ eyes.
The men were originally supposed face off June 8th at Home Depot Center in Carson, California when Ramos was still undefeated. For personal reasons Ramos would excuse himself from that contest.
The match up is still an interesting one as both fighters are southpaws and have the ability to fight from the outside and are not afraid to exchange in close quarters.
A venue for the contest has not been announced. The last Golden Boy Live to take place in San Antonio September 2nd took place at the Cowboys Dancehall.
