The highly anticipated WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine Super Welterweight Championship fight between Saul Canelo Alvarez and Austin Trout takes place tonight. Over 38,000 fans are expected to attended the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas for one of the biggest fights in recent years in the Super Welterweight division.
Both men are vying for their first unification. Trout is looking to become just the third New Mexican-male to unify titles; Albuquerque’s fighters Johnny Tapia and Bob Foster are the first two.
Tapia completed this feat in 1997 by defeating hometown rival Danny Romero to claim the WBO and IBF Super Flyweight titles at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Light heavyweight Bob Foster unified the WBA and WBC titles in 1972 by stopping Vicente Rondon at the Convention Center in Miami Beach, Florida.
The difference for Trout is that the other two men were favored to win their respective bouts while he currently sits just over a one and a half to one favorite at +160 in many sportsbooks, meaning if you were to bet $100 on Trout and he was victorious you would win your money back plus $60. Alvarez on the other hand has dropped in some sportsbooks from being a 2 to 1 favorite displaying the confidence both the books and fans have in Trout.
The action takes place at 8pm Mountain time on Showtime.
