Fidel Maldonado Jr.

Last night in Tulum, Quitana Roo, Mexico, Albuquerque’s Fidel Maldonado Jr. blasted his way back to the contender discussion by stopping Jorge Romero via 3rd round KO to claim the  WBC Latino Silver lightweight title.

Maldonado who was extremely gun-shy in his last serious contest against Michael Perez was everything but that in against Romero. A very aggressive Maldonado was even deducted a point in the second round for supposedly holding Romero’s head down. The referee would warn Maldonado about several insignificant fouls that were not even caused by him.

Maldonado showed an impressive chin taking Romero’s hard shots and responding with his own. A straight left would floor Romero early in the third. After attempting to stand and losing his balance referee Florentino Lopez would wave off the fight ending his seven fight win streak.
