Just minutes ago a tweet was posted on Saul “Canelo” Alvarez ‘ Twitter account where it was announced that he would be fighting Austin Trout on the May 4th Floyd Mayweather Jr. undercard at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Alvarez of Guadalajara, Mexico, is currently the WBC Super Welterweight champion and Trout is the WBA champion of the same 154lbs weight class, a belt Trout won by defeating Alvarez’ older brother Rigoberto in February of 2011.
In their last outings Alvarez easily outpointed Josesito Lopez by 5th round TKO and Trout became the first person to defeat future Hall of Famer Miguel Cotto in Madison Square Garden.
The upcoming battle between the two champions will be the co-main event, playing lead in to pound for pound boxing king Floyd Mayweather Jr’s bout. An opponent for Mayweather has yet to be named. A report by La Opinion earlier today did quote Golden Boy Promotions’ Roberto Diaz as stating that Mayweather’s opponent would be Robert Guerrero.
Previous reports and indications have pointed to a Mayweather vs Alvarez fight showdown in September of this year. That of course depending on if Alvarez is victorious May 4th.
