The very popular grappling series “Southwest Grapplefest” will return to Rio Rancho on May 4th, 2013. The Jiu Jitsu tournament returns after starting the year being hosted down south in Las Cruces. The successful series will host its ninth installment once again inside Cleveland High School where it has been for several of the past events.
The series is run by David Freidlander, a very popular figure in the grappling community in the state of New Mexico. His events have hosted popular names like former UFC fighter Henry Martinez, newly awarded Black Belt Armando Sanchez of Judgment MMA/Machado BJJ, Bellator fighters Lionel Lanham, Josh Montoya and Josh Lanier, as well as SWFight.com’s Jiu Jitsu prospect of the year Jesse Martinez.
The tournament isn’t solely for the top grapplers in the state, the event is very popular and extremely efficiently in its kids program. The turn out for the young grapplers is often high in volume and the 1st thru 4th medals lead to many happy children competing in the Jiu Jitsu tournaments.
