Those hitting Santa Fe’s Pueblo Pavilion for the ESPN Friday Night Fights card tonight to support a local fighter will be in for a treat when the card gets to the co-main event and main event bouts.
The evenings main event bout between Covina California’s John Molina Jr and St. Louis, Missouri’s Dannie Williams has huge implications for the lightweight division not just nationally but on a worldwide scale.
Molina is coming off of a WBC Lightweight title fight loss to Antonio DeMarco. The match was the biggest fight of Molina’s career. A straight left hand just 26 seconds into the fight from DeMarco would stun Molina send him flying into the ropes where he would succumb to a barrage of punches.
DeMarco would go on to lose his next bout to one of the best young boxers in the world Adrien Broner.
Williams on the otherhand is looking for his first title shot. With only two losses and 18 his 24 wins coming by the way of KO a victory over Molina will make him a very good looking prospect.
In March of last year he challenged for the NABF Light Weight a minor belt which usually serves as a precursor to the major betls. Williams lost a one-sided fight to Henry Lundy who himself lost his next bout to Raymundo Beltran. Beltran has set himself up as a possible opponent for one of the four champions in the weightclass.
Featured on the undercard will be a very good looking prospect in northern California’s Brandon Gonzales. The undefeated super middleweight is trained by Virgil Hunter, one of the best trainers in the world. Hunter’s current stable includes top pound for pound champion Andre Ward and former world titlist Amir Khan.
The fights are set to take place tonight at the Pueblo Pavilion in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Doors will open at 5, with the first bell at 6 p.m. ESPN’s televised portion of the card will begin at 7 p.m.
