Another Albuquerque fighter will be competing for a world title in 2013. In two short weeks New Mexico fight fans will support John Dodson in his UFC title venture and a few months later teammate Michelle Waterson (10-3) will fight for a major MMA title as she headlines Invicta FC 5 against current Atomweight Champion Jessica Penne (10-1).
The event is expected to take place April 13th in California and will mark Penne’s first title defense. Penne won the title this past October with a second round triangle win over Naho Sugiyama. Waterson was last seen on that same card, beating Lacey Schuckman in a very competitive bout. The two 105-pound fighters are considered the two best in the weight class and this bout should leave no doubt as to who is the best Atomweight fighter in the world.
Waterson is currently on a four-fight win streak and remains one of the most notable women coming out of not only the Jackson’s-Winklejohn’s camp but in the state of New Mexico. While the “Karate Hottie” is well versed in her striking, she has won six of ten career victories by submission.
The fight will definitely be an intriguing one so stay tuned to SWFight.com for more coverage and breakdowns on this title fight.
