King of the Cage will have a busy first month of 2013 as the event titled “Regulators” will be one of three shows in January. The event will be held in Scottsdale, Arizona inside the Talking Stick Resort on January 19th, 2013. New Mexico fight fans should keep their eyes and ears at attention as our local mixed martial artists will be heading to Arizona for some regional MMA action.
New Mexico’s Cody East (5-1) will look to bring his fight ending power striking to the cage when he faces off with the most notable opponent of his young career, former Bellator title challenger and home town fighter Eric Prindle (7-3).
After suffering back to back losses to two of Bellator’s toughest Heavyweights including undefeated Champion Cole Konrad, Prindle is looking to bounce back in the regional scene and he will have a handful with East. “The Freight Train” has finished all five of his career victories with punches or submission and his aggressive style is hard to handle when you have such a massive sized fighter charging in. The two giant martial artists should provide a fun match up.
One of our states top prospects, Ray Borg (1-0 pro, 4-0 amateur) will also be fighting on the under card of the event. After a successful and impressive 2012 that saw Borg go 3-0 under the King of the Cage banner, he will look to start early on his rise to bigger things fighting in his second professional bout.
The slick grappling of Borg has amassed five straight victories coming by way of submission in his short career. Mix in the grappling with improving stand up and the talented Borg looks to be well on his way to becoming a break out star in New Mexico’s MMA scene. A big win in Arizona will push Borg one step closer to solidifying the hype that has many regional followers clamoring and excited to follow.
The evening’s main event will be a King of the Cage title fight at 145-pounds that will feature New Mexico’s Donald Sanchez (27-13) fighting Dustin Phillips (13-7). Representing FIT NHB in Albuquerque, Sanchez will fight to keep his winning streak alive as he has won two straight and four out of five in 2012.
Listed as an Xtreme Couture fighter, Phillips is well rounded offensively and in his seven losses he has only ever been submitted. The hard hitting Sanchez should put that statistic to the test as Sanchez as he has finished three of his last four opponents via technical knock out. On paper this will be the stiffest test for Phillips and the best opportunity as he will be fighting for the King of the Cage title.
