Last night at the YDI Wool Warehouse in Albuquerque, Chavez Promotions delivered another great card with their Warehouse Rumble II event.
Less than a month after his tough bout against Raul Carrillo, Albuquerque’s Josh “Pitbull” Torres was able to outpoint Aztec’s Joseph Gomez via a split decision in the main event of the evening. Both men had their moments in the contest landing solid blows.
Ultimately, it was Gomez’ inability to fully re-establish his jab and combinations in the later rounds that allowed Torres to counter-punch and slide in with several one-time power shots enabling him to set up combinations.
“If I would have taken a lot more of his shots, I feel like he would have put me down or took me out because he had a lot of power for his size. I was able to counter effectively and missed lot of his shots,” said Torres.
“I should have done more,” said Gomez. “I kept coming in straight up. Instead of to the side, I should have thrown more combinations. Hopefully I can get a rematch.”
In the co-main event of the evening, after more than a year of inactivity, Las Vegas’ Arturo Crespin lived up to his nickname and bulled his way to a unanimous decision over Albuquerque’s Nazareth Rojas.
Quickly becoming one of the hottest up-and-comers in Albuquerque boxing 19-year-old Cristian Cabral was able to remain undefeated with an announced technical decision over Michael Herrera. The fight was stopped in the third round on the ringside doctor’s advise.
A vastly improved John Herrera, put his last performance at the Wool Warehouse in February, behind him, with a very good technical contest against Santa Fe’s Antonio Garcia.
“The last time I was here at the Wool Warehouse against Yoel (Gonzalez), my father had just passed away,” says Herrera. “In my last two fights I’ve let loose I just feel more comfortable, more relaxed.”
