ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Earlier today we had the opportunity to speak to “Regular” WBA Super Welterweight champion Austin Trout’s trainer Louie Burke. With last night’s surprising victory by Josesito Lopez over Victor Ortiz, WBC Junior Middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, is now searching for a new opponent for his September 15th match-up.
In the mix are a handful of possible replacements for Ortiz, including Erislandy Lara, Carlos Quintana, James Kirkland and Austin Trout.
“It’s a strong possibility. We’re excited about it materializing. With these negotiation, there is going to be big money involved in this fight,” continues Burke, “We don’t want to end up taking short money because we’re anxious.”
“We’ll probably find out (more information) within the next couple of days from (advisor Al Haymon). As a trainer I’m very excited. It’s something we’ve been waiting for, for over a year,” said the Las Cruces based trainer. “We’ve had dream of these big fights, and now we’re at that point.”
Burke, who works as a fire fighter for the City of Las Cruces missed last night’s Ortiz-Lopez fight.
“I was at work when Austin called to me to tell me, ‘Ortiz got his jaw broken, maybe the Canelo thing is not dead,’” recalls Burke. “I was rooting for Josesito, just for the possibility of us fighting Canelo. I was excited when he won. That opened up a great opportunity for us.”
As far as for the next steps? “We’re just waiting,” said Burke.
