After hearing that MMA fighter Andres Quintana (you may remember him from our “Sunday Morning Circle” coverage) would be facing Matthew Baca on the upcoming Golden Girl Promotions boxing card on April 28th, we had to catch up with the rising fighter; he was training at Mean 1 East with team mate Martin Manrique. A few months away from his 21st birthday, Andres is taking his fight against Baca very seriously.
“I believe that someday this young man will hold a belt and he has given up everything to chase his dream” – Coach Chris Avila.
Working with Coach Chris Avila, Andres had a session on mitts:
• Back to basics 1-2’s
• Focusing on head movement
• Worked on tight combinations (Uppercut, over hands, hooks, and pressing forward)
• Speed drill to to finish the day
Andreas was looking great. He is one of those freakish athletes that is always in fight shape, and ready to take on any opponent that is put in front of him, at any time. Becoming such a well rounded fighter, he has had trouble finding fights. He is in a limbo state where he is good enough to not only compete, but beat the best that his weight class has to offer, but his record lacks the volume to be recognized by the larger organizations. Andres will only become more of a force to recon with as his quantity starts to match his quality.
